Journal Assignment 1: Composition

Good
I chose this photo to represent good composition because of its balance, variety, and repetition. The horizontal  layers bring visual stability while contrasting with each other bringing visual interest. The variety of different shapes and lines keep the viewer's eye moving throughout the photo. The repetition in the rocks and the beams across the ceiling also contribute to the movement in this photo.

Bad
Even though this photo has some visual interest, I chose it to represent bad composition because of the photo's lack of focal point and balance. The beam in the center immediately draws the viewer's eye, and leads it no where. The beam is "in jail".

Good
I love the movement of this photo, and that is why I chose it for good composition. The concrete wall takes the viewer's eye and leads it to the focal point, the bike. I also like the shapes on the concrete floor which add variety and repetition.

Bad
In this photo, the bike is awkwardly placed sort of in the center. There is no balance or movement in this photo, and the beam to the left is a waste of space.
